Crazy frog on a bike!

A Thai woman claims her pet frog enjoys riding toy motorcycles and can predict winning lottery numbers.

Tongsai Boommrungtai, 52, came across the black spotted frog, which she called Nong Oui, outside her house in Roi-Et.

"The frog had a small chick in its mouth," she said. "I looked her straight in the eye and knew I could communicate with her. I told her to drop the chick and she did and then came hopping in.

"Ever since she has been a member of the family. For a long time villagers would come round and get tips on the National Lottery with the frog's help. They used to read the skin on her stomach and look for numbers.

"Ten people subsequently won the lottery which drew crowds to the house - and then they started losing. So I have had to ground her. I promised one day to take her to the seaside, and her dream has come true.

"There is nothing more that she likes than to chill out on her toy Harley-Davison, or a battery operated dumper truck. But she can strike a pose just about anywhere."

Windows Vista Tiny(Fits on a CD)

No product key is needed. Windows Vista is activated upon installation. Windows is fully patched with all "important" Windows Updates to 8th may 2007. The 512Mb RAM memory requirement is reduced to just 256Mb. The requirement of almost 8Gb of disk space is reduced to less than 3Gb. This installation only takes up about 35% of the size of a normal installation of Windows Vista. Many components have been removed from this edition of Windows, but you still have Microsoft's three main programs:
* Internet Explorer 7
* Windows Mail (Formerly "Outlook Express").

You also have the new Aero theme in this edition of Windows and the ability to use Windows Update.
There are no services taken out of this special edition of Windows. Only three services have been disabled:
* Remote Registry
* Windows Error ReportingService
* Windows Search
You cannot do an upgrade installation from this CD, because the upgrade files have been removed. You can only install Windows by booting from the CD and formatting your partition or hard drive.

DISABLE INDEXING SERVICES

Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don't search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:

1. Go to Start
2. ###### Settings
3. ###### Control Panel
4. Double-###### Add/Remove Programs
5. ###### the Add/Remove Window Components
6. Uncheck the Indexing services
7. ###### Next

OPTIMISE DISPLAY SETTINGS

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:

7. Leave only the following ticked:

DISABLE PERFORMANCE COUNTERS

Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC's performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea.

To disable:

1. download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List
2.Then select each counter in turn in the 'Extensible performance counters' window and clear the 'performance counters enabled' checkbox at the bottom.button below.

SPEEDUP FOLDER BROWSING

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

1. Open My Computer
2. ###### on Tools menu
3. ###### on Folder Options
4. ###### on the View tab.
5. Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
6. ###### Apply
7. ###### Ok
8. Reboot your computer

IMPROVE MEMORY USAGE

Cacheman Improves the performance of your computer by optimizing the disk cache, memory and a number of other settings.

Once Installed:

1.Go to Show Wizard and select All
2.Run all the wizards by selecting Next or Finished until you are back to the main menu. Use the defaults unless you know exactly what you are doing.
3.Exit and Save Cacheman
4.Restart Windows

OPTIMISE YOUR PAGEFILE

If you give your pagefile a fixed size it saves the operating system from needing to resize the page file.

1. Right ###### on My Computer and select Properties
2. Select the Advanced tab
3. Under Performance choose the Settings button
4. Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
5. Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.

Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

RUN BOOTVIS - IMPROVE BOOT TIMES

BootVis will significantly improve boot times

1. Download and Run
2. Select Trace
3. Select Next Boot and Driver Trace
4. A Trace Repetitions screen will appear, select Ok and Reboot
5. Upon reboot, BootVis will automatically start, analyze and log your system's boot process. When it's done, in the menu go to Trace and select Optimize System
6. Reboot.
7. When your machine has rebooted wait until you see the Optimizing System box appear. Be patient and wait for the process to complete

REMOVE THE DESKTOP PICTURE

Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.

1. Right ###### on Desktop and select Properties
2. Select the Desktop tab
3. In the Background window select None
4. ###### Ok

REMOVE FONTS FOR SPEED

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

1. Open Control Panel
2. Open Fonts folder
3. Move fonts you don't need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

DISABLE UNNECESSARY SERVICES

Because Windows XP has to be all things to all people it has many services running that take up system resources that you will never need. Below is a list of services that can be disabled on most machines:

Go to Start and then Run and type "services.msc"
Doubleclick on the service you want to change
Change the startup type to 'Disable"

TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE

System Restore can be a useful if your computer is having problems, however storing all the restore points can literally take up Gigabytes of space on your hard drive. To turn off System Restore:

Open Control Panel
###### on Performance and Maintenance
###### on System
###### on the System Restore tab
Tick 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'
###### 'Ok'

DEFRAGMENT YOUR PAGEFILE

Keeping your pagefile defragmented can provide a major performance boost. One of the best ways of doing this is to creat a separate partition on your hard drive just for your page file, so that it doesn't get impacted by normal disk usage. Another way of keeping your pagefile defragmented is to run PageDefrag. This cool little app can be used to defrag your pagefile, and can also be set to defrag the pagefile everytime your PC starts. To install:

Download and Run PageDefrag
Tick "Defrag at next Reboot",
###### "Ok"
Reboot

SPEEDUP FOLDER ACCESS - DISABLE LAST ACCESS UPDATE

If you have a lot of folders and subdirectories on your computer, when you access a directory XP wastes a lot of time updating the time stamp showing the last access time for that directory and for ALL sub directories. To stop XP doing this you need to edit the registry. If you are uncomfortable doing this then please do not attempt.

Go to Start and then Run and type "regedit"
###### through the file system until you get to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem"
Right-###### in a blank area of the window on the right and select 'DWORD Value'
Create a new DWORD Value called 'NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate'
Then Right ###### on the new value and select 'Modify'
Change the Value Data to '1'
###### 'OK'

DISABLE SYSTEM SOUNDS

Surprisingly, the beeps that your computer makes for various system sounds can slow it down, particularly at startup and shut-down. To fix this turn off the system sounds:

Open Control Panel
###### Sounds and Audio Devices
Check Place volume icon in taskbar
###### Sounds Tab
Choose "No Sounds" for the Sound Scheme
###### "No"
###### "Apply"
###### "OK"

IMPROVE BOOT TIMES

A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option in enables but on some builds it is not so below is how to turn it on.

Go to Start Menu and ###### Run
Type in "Regedit" then ###### ok
Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOpt imizeFunction"
Select "Enable" from the list on the right
Right on it and select "Modify"
Change the value to "Y to enable"
Reboot

IMPROVE SWAPFILE PERFORMANCE

If you have more than 256MB of RAM this tweak will considerably improve your performance. It basically makes sure that your PC uses every last drop of memory (faster than swap file) before it starts using the swap file.

Go to Start then Run
Type "msconfig.exe" then ok
###### on the System.ini tab
Expand the 386enh tab by *** on the plus sign
###### on new then in the blank box type"ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1"

Restart PC

MAKE YOUR MENUS LOAD FASTER

This is one of my favourite tweaks as it makes a huge difference to how fast your machine will 'feel'. What this tweak does is remove the slight delay between *** on a menu and XP displaying the menu.

Go to Start then Run
Type 'Regedit' then ###### 'Ok'
Find "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\"
Select "MenuShowDelay"
Right ###### and select "Modify'
Reduce the number to around "100"
This is the delay time before a menu is opened. You can set it to "0" but it can make windows really hard to use as menus will open if you just look at them - well move your mouse over them anyway. I tend to go for anywhere between 50-150 depending on my mood

MAKE PROGRAMS LOAD FASTER

This little tweak tends to work for most programs. If your program doesn't load properly just undo the change. For any program:

Right-###### on the icon/shortcut you use to launch the program
Select properties
In the 'target' box, add ' /prefetch:1' at the end of the line.
###### "Ok"
Voila - your programs will now load faster.

IMPROVE XP SHUTDOWN SPEED

This tweak reduces the time XP waits before automatically closing any running programs when you give it the command to shutdown.

Go to Start then select Run
Type 'Regedit' and ###### ok

Right ###### and select 'Modify'
Change the value to '1000'

SPEED UP BOOT TIMES I

This tweak works by creating a batch file to clear the temp and history folders everytime you shutdown so that your PC doesn't waste time checking these folders the next time it boots. It's quite simple to implement:

1. Open Notepad and create a new file with the following entries:

RD /S /q "C:\Documents and Settings\"UserName without quotes"\Local Settings\History"
RD /S /q "C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\History"
RD /S /q "D:\Temp\" <--"Deletes temp folder, type in the location of your temp folder"

2. Save the new as anything you like but it has to be a '.bat' file e.g. fastboot.bat or deltemp.bat

3. ###### 'Start' then 'Run'

4. Type in 'gpedit.msc' and hit 'ok'

5. ###### on 'Computer Configuration' then 'Windows Settings'

6. Double-###### on 'Scripts' and then on 'Shutdown'

7. ###### 'Add' and find the batch file that you created and then press 'Ok'

SPEED UP BOOT TIMES II

When your PC starts it usually looks for any bootable media in any floppy or cd-rom drives you have installed before it gets around to loading the Operating System from the HDD. This can waste valuable time. To fix this we need to make some changes to the Bios.

1. To enter the bios you usually press 'F2' or 'delete' when your PC starts

2. Navigate to the 'Boot' menu

3. Select 'Boot Sequence'

4. Then either move your Hard drive to the top position or set it as the 'First Device'

5. Press the 'Escape' key to leave the bios. Don't forget to save your settings before exiting

Note: Once this change has been made, you won't be able to boot from a floppy disc or a CD-rom. If for some strange reason you need to do this in the future, just go back into your bios, repeat the steps above and put your floppy or CD-rom back as the 'First Device'

SPEED UP BOOT TIMES III

When your computer boots up it usually has to check with the network to see what IP addresses are free and then it grabs one of these. By configuring a manually assigned IP address your boot time will improve. To do this do the following:

1. ###### on 'Start' and then ''Connect To/Show All Connections'

2. Right-###### your network adapter card and ###### 'Properties'.

3. On the 'General' tab, select 'TCP/IP' in the list of services and ###### 'Properties'

4.I n the TCP/IP properties, ###### 'Use the following address' and enter an IP address for your PC. If you are using a router this is usually 192.168.0.xx or 192.168.1.xx. If you are not sure what address you could check with your ISP or go to 'Start/run' and type 'cmd' and then 'ipconfig/all'. This will show your current IP settings which you will need to copy.

5. Enter the correct details for 'Subnet mask', 'Default gateway' and 'DNS Server'. Again if you are not sure what figures to enter use 'ipconfig/all' as in stage 4.

FREE UP MEMORY

I found this useful app via FixMyXP. ClearMem Is an Excellent Tool for speeding up your XP Computer (especially if your system has been on for awhile and you have a lot of applications open). What it does, is it Forces pages out of physical memory and reduces the size of running processes if working sets to a minimum. When you run this tool, the system pauses because of excessive high-priority activity associated with trimming the working sets. To run this tool, your paging file must be at least as large as physical memory. To Check your Paging File:

1. Go to your control panel, then ###### on 'System', then go to the 'Advanced' Tab, and Under 'Performance' ###### 'Settings' then the 'Advanced' Tab

2. On the Bottom you should see 'Virtual Memory' and a value. This is the value that must be at least as large as how much memory is in your system.

3. If the Virtual Memory Value is smaller than your system memory, ###### Change and change the Min Virtual Memory to a number that is greater than your total system memory, then ###### 'Set' and Reboot.

4. Once you have rebooted install ClearMem

ENSURE XP IS USING DMA MODE

XP enables DMA for Hard-Drives and CD-Roms by default on most ATA or ATAPI (IDE) devices. However, sometimes computers switch to PIO mode which is slower for data transfer - a typical reason is because of a virus. To ensure that your machine is using DMA:

1. Open 'Device Manager'

2. Double-###### 'IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers'

3. Right-###### 'Primary Channel' and select 'Properties' and then 'Advanced Settings'

4. In the 'Current Transfer Mode' drop-down box, select 'DMA if Available' if the current setting is 'PIO Only'

ADD CORRECT NETWORK CARD SETTINGS

Some machines suffer from jerky graphics or high CPU usage even when a machine is idle. A possible solution for this, which, can also can help network performance is to:

1. RightClick 'My Computer'

2. Select 'Manage'

3. ###### on 'Device Manager'

4. DoubleClick your network adaptor under 'Network Adapters'

5. In the new window, select the 'Advanced' tab

6. Select 'Connection Type' and select the correct type for your card and then Reboot

REMOVE ANNOYING DELETE CONFIRMATION MESSAGES

Although not strictly a performance tweak I love this fix as it makes my machine 'feel' faster. I hate the annoying 'are you sure?' messages that XP displays, especially if I have to use a laptop touchpad to close them. To remove these messages:

1. Right-###### on the 'Recycle Bin' on the desktop and then ###### 'Properties'

2. Clear the 'Display Delete Confirmation Dialog' check box and ###### 'Ok'

If you do accidently delete a file don't worry as all is not lost. Just go to your Recycle Bin and 'Restore' the file.

DISABLE PREFETCH ON LOW MEMORY SYSTEMS

Prefetch is designed to speed up program launching by preloading programs into memory - not a good idea is memory is in short supply, as it can make programs hang. To disable prefetch:

1. ###### 'Start' then 'Run'

2. Type in 'Regedit' then ###### 'Ok'

3. Navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\'

4. Right-###### on "EnablePrefetcher" and set the value to '0'

5. Reboot

A group of friends have recreated two Star Wars films in a Lincolnshire garage.

They used household objects as scenery, toys as props and PC wizardry to recreate the special effects, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Backyard Productions have so far spoofed two Star Wars movies, calling them The Empire Strikes Backyard and Star Wars - The Emperor's New Clones.

Co-founder Darren Scales said: "We have got bubble wrap on the ceiling, we've got bottle tops and yoghurt pots on the walls along with tubes from the centre of rolls of carpets.

"The blasters are water pistols, we just stuck a few bits of lids on, add a bit of spray paint and then you have a blaster.

"You take a hard hat, put an Imperial sticker on it and suddenly it's an Imperial work helmet for someone building the Death Star - it's not rocket science.

"It's the same with the light sabres. Up close they look awful but you put a stick in it, you hold it and on screen you can't tell the difference."

The amateur company, which has an eight-strong team, shot their first short sketches in 1993 but have gone on to spoof some major Hollywood films, including Jurassic Park (Geriatric Park).

Mr Scales added: "There is no way we could have done this 10 years ago. We were making film 10 years ago but we have so much more freedom because of the technology, we can now do so much more.

"It's strange to think that 30 years on from the original Star Wars we are now doing the same thing out in converted garages."

Chris Sands, 24, has tried everything including holding his breath, drinking from the wrong side of a glass and getting a fright since the hiccups started last February.

So far nothing has worked and the singer has been left unable to perform with his band; during the more intense bouts he struggles to sleep, eat or even breathe properly.

He has had a brain scan, abdomen scan, chest scan and CT scan all in an effort to uncover the reason behind his mystery hiccupping, but so far there has been no diagnosis.

In his most recent effort to get to the root of the problem, Chris tried an oxygen chamber, where he was placed in a large metal tank with an oxygen mask over his mouth, despite suffering from claustrophobia.

After admitting defeat, doctors are now sending him to a psychologist because they believe his body has now simply just got used to hiccupping.

Desperate for help, Chris launched a blog on the MySpace website earlier in the year in the hopes that people will help him find a cure.

Charles Osborne, of Anthon, Iowa, holds the record for the longest ever bout of hiccups, which lasted for 68 years from 1922 until 1990.

Leaning tower of Pisa loses title

A German church steeple has knocked the leaning tower of Pisa from the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most lopsided building.

The tower in the village of Suurhusen applied in June for the title and has now officially beaten the famous landmark in Pisa.
Guinness Book of Records confirmed the award after officials measured it leaning at a 5.19 degree angle compared to only 3.97 degree angle at which the tower of Pisa leans.
Olaf Kuchenbecker of the Guinness World Records office in Hamburg said: "It is a world record."
The church was built in middle of the 13th century but a 90ft tower was added in 1450.
The tower was built on wooden foundations and the combination of the oak wood foundations and wet soil has caused the tower to slowly lean to one side over the years.
Several attempts to stop the tower from leaning any further have been made since 1982, and it was eventually stabilised in 1996.
The church is still in use and also offers guided tours but church officials are appealing for donations to help maintain the building.

Police sent invites to 500 people for a party at which Ozzy was supposed to be the star guest.
But the party in Farg North Dakota, was actually a scam by police officers to round up missing criminal suspects.
Osbourne said it was "insulting" that his name was used but police argued it was a "creative" way to fight crime.
The star was selected because he was due to play a gig in a nearby arena, reports the BBC.
Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney said he "meant no disrespect toward Mr Osbourne or his show".
"What we did was a very creative law enforcement technique to lure individuals who had active criminal warrants to come to us."
Abut 30 suspects turned up and all were arrested, he added.
But Ozzy said: "Instead of holding a press conference to pat himself on the back, Sheriff Laney should be apologising to me for using my name in connection with these arrests.
"It is insulting to me and to my audience and it shows how lazy this particular sheriff is when it comes to doing his job."

Dancing dentist injures patient

A US woman is suing her dentist who she claims nearly drilled her eye while dancing to the disco classic Car Wash.
Brandy Fanning, 31, claims George Trusty was dancing to Rose Royce's 1976 hit when his drill slipped, reports the Syracuse Post-Standard.
The inch-long bit punctured her sinus cavity, lodging by her eye socket at the Syracuse Community Health Centre.
She is suing Trusty, 57, for £300,000 in New York, saying he failed to honour a promise to pay her medical bills.
Ms Fanning underwent emergency surgery after Dr Trusty was unable to remove the bit, her lawyer, Joseph Cote III, said. Trusty would not comment.
Fanning had gone to the emergency dental clinic in October 2004 after pain in a molar worsened.
Dr Trusty gave her novocaine and while he was drilling the molar, she heard a snap.
The lawsuit said, Dr Trusty was "performing rhythmical steps and movements to the song Car Wash which was on the radio".

Judge sacked after coin toss verdict

A US judge who decided a custody dispute by tossing a coin has lost his job.
The Virginia Supreme Court ruled that Judge James Michael Shull failed to uphold the dignity of the judiciary.
Shull admitted tossing a coin to determine which divorced parent would get a child for Christmas.
He said he was trying to encourage the parents to decide the issue themselves, but later acknowledged he was wrong.
"A judge's act of tossing a coin in a courtroom to decide a legal issue pending before the court suggests that courts do not decide cases on their merits, but instead subject litigants to games of chance in serious matters without regard to the evidence or applicable law," the court said.
Judge Shull was also criticised for telling a woman to drop her trousers in curt in a case in which she was seeking a protective order against a partner who had allegedly stabbed her in the leg.
Shull knew the woman had a history of mental problems and insisted on seeing the wound, the court said.
The woman lowered her trousers once to display the wound, then a second time after Shull left the bench for a closer look to determine whether she had received stitches.

Diamond bra for sale

A jewellery company in China has made a bra out of more than 2,500 diamonds.

Priced at 10 million yuan (approx £650,000) and named Perfect, it was demonstrated by a model at the Yibai Department Store in Jinhua city, Zhejiang province.

The maker, Royal Décor Jewellery, says the piece used natural diamonds weighing more than 100 carats. The diamonds are set in 300 grams of white gold.

"The piece took more than 200 hours to create," said a spokesman.

Among the diamonds, 5 are 3 carats, while the rest are mostly 2 or 1 carat.

"The clasp of the bra is a 5.4 carat sapphire surrounded by 60 small diamonds", added the spokesman.

The basement of the store was filled with viewers, reports China News Network.

6,000-mile trek in tuxedos

Two adventurers have successfully completed a charity trek from Hong Kong to London on horseback - wearing tuxedos.

Briton Heath Buck and American Doug Campbell came up with the idea after they met in a Hong Kong bar.

They saw 19 countries on their four-month, 6,000-mile trip.

They travelled through remote regions of China, Vietnam, Tibet, Nepal, India, Pakistan and Kazakhstan, then across Europe.

According to the Sun Doug said: "Heath came up with the idea. Amazingly, I agreed to accompany him. We'd known each other less than two weeks. I felt like James Bond at times."

Their tuxedos were specially made from resilient fabrics in Bangkok, Thailand.

The money they raised along the way went on local causes - including helping rescued sex slaves in Nepal.

Tattoo spells out Coca-Cola

A man who has proudly showed off his tattoo for 26 years was baffled to realise it actually spelt Coca-Cola.

Vince Mattingley had his named tattooed on his chest in Chinese writing after asking staff at his favourite restaurant to write his name in Chinese symbols.

But a waiter drew the Coke words - and Vince had it etched on his chest.

Vince only realised the mistake when he recently travelled to Thailand and a barman asked him why he had Coca-Cola written on his chest, reports The Sun.

Vince, of Watford, said: "I thought it was a joke then I found out that's what it said. The restaurant staff must have had a good laugh about it."

He now plans to get another Oriental tattoo to cover up the name. He added: "I'm going to go with something Japanese this time."

A third ear for art

An Australian performer has been criticised for having an ear grafted onto his forearm in the name of art.

Cyprus-born Stelios Arcadiou, known as Stelarc, describes his extra ear as an "augmentation of the body's form".

But surgeons questioned whether such an operation should have been carried out without medical grounds, reports the BBC.

And a patient who had similar surgery to correct a birth defect said she found the artist's work offensive.

Stelarc, aged 61, admitted it had taken him years to find a surgeon prepared to perform the operation.

The ear does not function, but he hopes to have a microphone implanted to allow others to listen to what his extra ear picks up.

Reality TV star and model Sasha Gardner was born with one ear missing and recently took the first steps to have plastic surgery to rebuild the ear.

She said: "He views this as art but I personally find it offensive. This is not something people should be using as an expression of art."

Mr Francis Wells, a surgeon at Papworth Hospital, said: "This will provoke a reaction. I would not condemn him for it, but it could cause some people distress.

"There are a lot of people who have lost an ear in an accident who cannot easily have that ear replaced. This type of reconstruction is expensive."

Humans to marry robots

A British scientist has been awarded a doctorate for a paper predicting that humans will one day marry robots.

Maastricht University awarded David Levy a PhD for a thesis entitled Intimate Relationships with Artificial Partners.

Mr Levy wrote: "Trends in robotics and shifting attitudes on marriage are likely to result in sophisticated robots that will eventually be seen as suitable marriage partners.

The thesis examines human attitudes toward affection, love and sexuality and concluded that the findings are just as applicable to human interaction with robots of the future as they are to relationships between humans of today.

It was based on about 450 publications in the fields of psychology, sexology, sociology, robotics, materials science, artificial intelligence, gender studies and computer-human interaction.

Gameshow contestant admitted hiring hitman

A game show has been cancelled in Colombia after a contestant won £25,000 after admitting she had hired a hitman to kill her husband.

Nothing But The Truth has been a big hit in South America, subjecting competitors to a lie detector test, reports Metro News.

They had to truthfully answer 21 increasingly invasive questions to win £25,000.

But the producers got into trouble when contestant Rosa Maria Solano took home the top prize after telling viewers she had tried to have her husband killed.

She admitted hiring a hitman to carry out the deed, but the plan was not followed through.

"The crime couldn't be carried out because the hitman tipped off my husband and he ran away forever - God save me,"' said Mrs Solano.

TV station Caracol pulled the show after it was threatened with legal action.

A spokesman said: "We've reached the conclusion that the content of some of the interviews, for being excessively cruel, don't conform with what Caracol has always promoted."

The show spurred a boom in the use of lie detector tests among private companies to screen employees and protect themselves from the Colombian mafia.

Everything from extra-marital affairs to drug smuggling and homosexual prostitution was confessed to by contestants on the show.

Politician denies cheating in marathon

A former Mexican presidential candidate who was disqualified from the Berlin marathon for taking a short cut denies cheating.

Roberto Madrazo clocked the best time for his age but officials found he had skipped a nine mile section of the course.

But Mr Madrazo, 55, says he never claimed to have finished the race and walked to the finishing line after having to stop running.

He blamed political opponents for the furore surrounding the incident, which has seen him lampooned in his home country.

Race officials looked into the case after a photographer noticed Mr Madrazo finishing the race wearing a jacket and long running tights but hardly sweating.

Mr Madrazo said: "I had to stop after 21km and I went directly to the finish line for my clothes and my medal for taking part. In sport there are no short-cuts, there are personal challenges.

"It is political. By doing this, they are seeking to throw mud on a sporting activity that I have practiced for many years and on my new social project.

"My marathon times have been between three hours, 14 minutes and three hours, 54 minutes - never two hours and 40 minutes. It would be impossible for a 55-year-old man to do that

The latest installation in the Tate Modern gallery's massive Turbine Hall is a 550ft crack in the floor.

Colombian artist Doris Salcedo's work Shibboleth starts as a hairline crack and widens to about a foot across.

It cost about £300,000 and took more than six months to complete.

Miss Salcedo, 49, refused to say how she managed seemingly to crack open a concrete floor but said it involved delicate and intricate sculpting.

Her work aims to highlight divisions in society. "What is important is the meaning of the piece. The making of it is not important," she said.

Asked how deep the fissure goes, she replied: "It's bottomless. It's as deep as humanity."

Gallery managers had to secure health-and-safety clearance from Southwark Council before allowing the work to go ahead.

A Tate Modern spokesman said: "You would struggle to get a hand or foot inside because of the way it is constructed.

"We have leaflets at the entrance warning people to be careful as they approach, particularly if they have young children.

"It is an incredibly powerful installation."

Britain's tallest man met one of the world's shortest actors while shooting a new film.

Neil Fingleton, from County Durham, has a cameo in ShortFellas, set in Newcastle and starring Warwick Davies, who played Wicket the Ewok in Return of the Jedi.

The 26-year-old, who is 7ft 7in tall shook hands with the 3ft 6in actor as they filmed a trailer to raise backing for the movie.

It will be completed next year if producers can raise the £1.5m budget, reports the BBC.

Mr Davies, who also starred in Willow and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, said: "My fellow cast members, short actors themselves, have a wealth of acting experience and will bring so much to the film.

"2008 looks set to be a big year for ShortFellas, and I'm looking forward to the ride."

Mr Fingleton, from Gilesgate, stands a foot taller than footballer Peter Crouch and hopes to break into acting after playing basketball in the US and Europe.

Artists' secret shopping mall pad

Eight artists created a secret furnished apartment inside a US shopping mall - and stayed there for four years.

They took over a disused room connected to the car park of the mall in Providence, Rhode Island.

The artists ate, drank, slept, read, held meetings, watched TV and enjoyed PS2 games in their secret pad, reports the Providence Journal.

They furnished it with a sofa, a love seat, a coffee table, a breakfast table with four chairs, lamps, a throw rug and paintings.

But they lacked running water, a refrigerator and a toilet. The artists brought in jugs of drinking water and sneaked out to use mall toilets.

Their leader, performance artist Michael Townsend, 36, was arrested after security at the Providence Place mall finally caught up with them.

"The only regret I have is that I didn't get to continue," Townsend said. "I'm really sad about it."

The story spilled out in court, after he pleaded no contest to a criminal charge of trespassing.

Townsend said he wanted to "explore the phenomenon of the modern American enclosed mall, its social implications, and his own relationship with commerce and the world".

Mall spokesman Dante Bellini Jr pooh-poohed police detectives' and the artists' portrayal of the space as an apartment.

"It was an area with stuff in it," he said. "It was wrong on a number of levels... It was like a person breaking into your basement or your car at night and sleeping there. We certainly feel violated."
